MISS BALA
is an inspiring film about the ruthless war of drugs in Mexico. A story of a young girl, Laura Guererro, who painfully watched her dream of becoming a beauty pageant shattered as she’s the only witness and survivor from a drug deal went wrong. Not only did her dream shattered, she was also deceived, manipulated and dragged to the gates of the sewers of Mexico. The fact that the police, criminals, television, institutions, politicians and media have colluded to hide truth and make the innocent Laura a scapegoat really worsen the situation.
At a glimpse, this film reminds me of Maria Full of Grace, a teenage girl who had to become a drug mule. Despite the strong initial shot, ‘Miss Bala’ loses power and fails to hit the target. The agonizing story of a young Mexican woman tempted by luxury and fame, wrapped in a circle of corruption mafia and trying to get out as she watches the world she knew is crumbling has been considered as ‘another’ film of similar theme.
