HEMILYN ESCUDERO TAMAYO: WAY FORWARD FROM BEAUTY PAGEANTRY TO PURSUING PhD AND ARTS COURSE

By Noli A. Berioso

Philippine pageantry Icon Hemilyn Escudero-Tamayo former beauty queen, rotarian and entrepreneur is currently enrolled at the Yale University, Connecticut, USA for the purpose of professional growth and at the same time to further pursue passion for the arts. She entertained the idea to further enhance her talent in the arts after resigning from her post as President of the Mutya Ng Pilipinas,Inc., a popular national beauty pageant in the country early this year. Prior to her studies in the US, Hemilyn is currently enrolled at SAIDI (Southeast Asia Interdisciplinary Development Institute Graduate School of Organizational Development) where she is finishing her PhD in Organizational Development. Aside from being a beauty queen she also hosted several TV shows before on RPN 9 Kapatid, a medical and livelihood show, Studio 23’s Whats on Weekend, events and travel show etc.

As a beauty queen, Hemilyn started her career from the rank. She joined city and provincial pageants before making it to the national beauty pageant level. She then became the representative of the country in various international pageants abroad and brought home honors by placing among the winners or by bagging special awards. One of her most memorable international stints was during the Miss Globe pageant in Albania in 2005 where she ended up as the winner of the special title of Miss All Nation. For five years now, Miss Globe is one of the major titles at stake in the annual Bb. Pilipinas beauty pageant.

After her glorious years as a beauty queen, she became a professional mentor and trainer in a well known and respected international modeling and personality development school, John Robert Powers. Her name in the industry became a word of mouth as an effective coach to aspiring beauty queens and models. Years after, she established her own modeling and personality development school (Total Image) where she partnered with some prominent personalities in the industry and trained models, beauty queens alike and some of the premiered actors and actresses of the Philippine Industry. As a Marketing Specialist, she helped some of the aspiring organizers/producers to make it into the mainstream of pageant industry. As an amateur artist, most of her works were bought either by arts enthusiasts/collectors, friends or relatives. She became a bonafide member of United Women’s Artists Association of the Philippines, a group of professional women having common inclinations towards the arts. She joined several exhibits, the most recent was last March of this year held at Filinvest, Alabang dubbed as Arts South Festival. Part from the proxeeds of her art works goes to chosen charity institution. She also ventured into the beauty and wellness (salon and spa) business with the opening of the Beauty Lounge Manila in Las Pinas City.

Hemilyn is also considering to try the world of politics. Aside from being a close relative of former senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero, it is also is a public knowledge that her late father was a public servant for more than three decades. Some of her close aficionados say that it is high time for her to get involved in public service. Probably after her PhD, she will seriously think about the idea of running for an office as a public servant. As a former “beauconera”, she is not closing her doors to the world of beauty pageants. After all, she had devoted almost 2 decades of her life in joining and organizing beauty contest in the country. But for now, her family and her post graduate course are her priority
